Arauco Gains In Spite of Unstable Pulp Price

Chile's Celulosa Arauco y Constitución reported a strong gain in earnings, up to US$196.6 million in the third quarter compared with US$26.9 million same period 2001. New MDF plant in Argentina

Alto Paraná has started rolling out production levels at its new MDF plant in Puerto Piray, Misiones, Argentina. The company, which is owned by Chile' s Arauco, invested US$40 million in the plant, which now employees 110 people and in October had a production of 18,500 cubic metres, near its maximum of 20,700 cubic metres.... Brazil Pulp Exports Grow 53 % in October

Exports of Brazilian pulp increase by 52.9 per cent in October over the same month in 2001. It is also reported via the Brazilian pulp producer organisation, Bracelpa, that exports for pulp are expected to reach about US$1.6 billion this year.... [more...]

Scandinavian and American Promotion Organisation Cooperating in China

Exciting things are going on in the Chinese market. Nordic Timber Council is working with US and Canadian organisations to market wood products for large-scale construction projects in China. “Our goal is to convince the Chinese to build a large wooden tennis or indoor swimming hall for the summer Olympics in 2008 in Beijing”, says Inge-Bo Asplund, project manager for Nordic Timber Council. German beech sawmill survives

WPH, one of the largest German beech sawmills, started production again. After the former owner and CEO Rolf Schlünkes founded a hive-off vehicle, the company produces in two shifts beech lumber. Beginning of August WPH filed insolvency and in September stopped production. WPH suffered a deficit of 1 Mio. Euro caused by a Chinese buyer. Last year WPH sold 20 000 m3 beech roundwood to China. Mixed Fortunes for Beech Imports

Between January and August 2002 China imported 450,700 cubic metres of Beech logs, a year-on-year decline of about 18%. On the other hand, Beech sawnwood imports rose slightly to 274,400 cubic metres, an increase of around 8% compared to the same period last year ( 254,500 cubic metres).
