From January to November 2017, 7.8% less or 26,400 fewer residential building permits were granted in Germany. As reported by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the construction of a total of 313,700 apartments was completed in the period mentioned. In a three-month comparison, the number of approved apartments decreased by 11.6% from September to November 2017 compared to the same period of the previous year.

In the first eleven months of 2017, the number of new construction apartments in residential buildings has declined by 5.3% or 15,100 units compared to the same period of the previous year. This decline was evident in all types of buildings: The number of building permits for apartments in single-family homes has declined by 5.3% or by 4,600 dwellings, in two-family dwellings by 2.2% or by 500 dwellings, respectively, and by 0.4% in multi-family dwellings % or by 600 apartments.

The number of permits for dormitories (-42.8% and -9,500 dwellings, respectively) has fallen sharply. Refugee housing is one of them. Excluding residence permits, the decline in new residential building permits totaled 2.1% year-on-year.
